Banging, hissing, knocking radiators are a classic pre-war NYC problem. Here’s the cause and tonight’s quick fixes.

If you live in a pre-war NYC building, you know the sound: a violent BANG from the radiator at 6am that sounds like someone hitting the pipe with a hammer. It’s called water hammer, and it can have several causes.

Why Steam Radiators Bang

Most older NYC buildings use steam heat. In a one-pipe system, steam rises through the same pipe that carries condensed water back down. When water pools where steam wants to travel, the steam can slam into it — that’s the bang. Two common causes are:

1. The radiator isn’t pitched correctly

A one-pipe radiator generally needs a slight pitch toward the inlet pipe so condensed water can drain back. If the radiator was moved or the floor has settled, water can collect instead.

A simple check: with the radiator cool, place a level on top and look for an obvious reverse pitch. Do not force, disconnect or alter piping. If you are unsure, ask your super or a qualified heating professional.

2. The air vent may be clogged or failing

The vent on the side lets air escape as steam enters. A failing vent can contribute to noise, uneven heating or hissing. Because steam systems can be hot and pressurized, let the system cool and follow building guidance before touching components.

The Main Valve

On many one-pipe steam radiators the supply valve is intended to be fully open during normal operation rather than used as a fine temperature control. If the valve is leaking, stuck or you are unsure what type of system you have, contact your building super or a qualified heating professional.

When to Call Someone

If basic observations do not explain the noise, the cause may be a sagging pipe, building pressure, a trap or another part of the heating system. Those are building-system issues that should go to your super, landlord or an appropriately licensed/qualified heating or plumbing professional.

Also have apartment repair items?
